Check out this aspiring, young film maker's work, Afternoon with Sandra Sutter: Indigenous Women in the Arts. The 11-minute video was part of her Indigenous Film Studies class at Mount Royal University. March Sandra was honoured to be featured in a short documentary created, produced, directed and edited by Abby Kendall. Click on Winner poster to watch her reaction to receiving the award. June Sandra took home the Metis Artist-Group of the Year Award at the Summer Solstice Indigenous Music Awards which took place virtually on June 12 at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa. In fact, the task force's work will contribute to a sense of diversity, acceptance and belonging in the workplace - themes that run through much of her music. Sandra's appointment is for nine months and she assures us it won't interfere with her creative endeavors. Also in July, Sandra was appointed to a federal task force to review Canada's Employment and Equity Act, a key piece of legislation that aims to promote fairness, equity and diversity in federally regulated workplaces. Indian in the Child, (or see video above), from the Cluster Stars album, aims to honour those who have suffered, died and lost loved ones as a result of the government's misguided policies. It is also our hope that you will join the movement to promote truth and reconciliation and, in doing so, help forge a better future of Indigenous people in Canada. With the recent discovery of unmarked graves at residential schools near Kamloops and Cowessess Nations, many Canadians are struggling to come to terms with our country's mistreatment of Indigenous people.
July Sandra recently acquired some powerful images to go along with her spoken word piece, Indian in the Child, a tribute to residential school survivors and those who perished. Metis Elder Edmee Cornstock (right frame) began the day with an opening prayer, in English and Michif, and a reminder that love will see us through these challenging times. Sandra also had the honour of performing with Doug Charters and Darren Barton at Calgary's Olympic Plaza to commemorate Canada's first national day of Truth and Reconciliation.
